Ok, I am tired of my day job and really (have been wanting this since I was a kid) want to be a professional illustrator. I have seen lots on stuff like matte paintings and the like - which I really dig - and have decided to do a huge matte painting of sorts with a combo of hi res photos, painting in Photoshop and Illustrator and traditional hand drawing to get the picture I want.
I swear I have seen stuff like this done before professionally, but what do the webcomics and internet community think of approaching digital matte painting and illustration this way? Is it TOO digital and not considered illustration? Is there not enough hand drawn/human element in it?
Lemme know what ya think.

I know what you're thinking. That's a tough question for me, because I find it aggrivating in art when people essentially edit a picture and people praise him as an artist.
-BUT-
I DO use photos in the backgrounds of some panels in JSR, but I always feel quilty when I do.
I think the decision of whether or not there is too much digital versus organic involved I think the question comes down to the picture in question.
It raises the question: What exactly is the definition of "artist" in a world where the computer is used so easily to create shortcuts.

It raises the question: What exactly is the definition of "artist" in a world where the computer is used so easily to create shortcuts. There is still a certain artistry in manipulating a picture using those shortcuts. . . .and since the end result is one persons perception of how something should look. . .it is still art. So the person who did the manipulation is an artist!. . . .

This is the kind of art I was talking about in my first post. I used photos for the buildings, sky and landscape BUT I have done alot of work on all of them to manip them into this so far. I will do a tutorial over at www.gutterflycomix.com when I am done showing exactly what I started with and how I get the finished thing. I am still not done. I made the building look busted up in photoshop by painting over the building and I drew the birds in plus used painting in Photoshop to get the atmospheric perspective. I'll post more progress pics as I have them.

like I said on your board, man it's really good. I especially like the mountains. One thing I could mention is that it looks rather fake in some cases. The contrast and color maybe a little too much.

Unless, of course, it represents either an alien landscape. . .or a future earth (after worldwide devastation).

yeah. I'm just saying that if he's going for realism (which Thomas, you may not be) then you might want to lower the color saturation.
One other thing I noticed is that the sky is strikingly orange, but in the forground you don't see much evidence of that. Try putting orange highlights on things - especially the metal buildings - to show some reflection of the super-bright sky.

Well I am not going for 100% realism. I mean, I want it to look realistic, but mainly I want it to look like a painting, ya know.
So yeah, some things looking somewhat fake is ok, but keep in mind, when I add the rest of the stuff in it the whole thing should come together alot better than they are now.
As for the highlights, that is exactly what is lacking that I couldnt quite put my finger on until now. I will add that stuff very last.
Thanks.

The clouds definitely "add" something to the picture. . .it gives it more of a surrealistic appearance.
