One of the biggest upcoming titles on the Nintendo DS front is one that's sure to draw many to the system in Japan. Jump Superstars, a fighting game featuring characters from Jump comic properties such as Naruto, One Piece and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobobobobobobobobobob (is that right?), is being brought to the system from Nintendo itself, giving many visions of a portable Smash Brothers. We were given a chance to try out the title in its playable debut at the Jump Festa comic/game event, which took place this past weekend near Tokyo. The one screenshot that was unveiled last week showed what appeared to be 2D combat on the top screen with mysterious comic-style images on the bottom screen. Our playtest has revealed just what this bottom screen is about. The bottom screen shows the cards in your "Manga Deck." Prior to battle, each player is given a different Manga Deck. By tapping sections of the deck with your finger (the Nintendo staffers told us to not use the stylus when we tried to grab it), you can call upon the power of the card to help you in battle. Different cards have different effects in battle. Some cards, known as "Battle Cards," change the character that you're controlling to the character on the card. This allows you to switch between characters as you fight. Another type of card is the "Support Card," which makes the character shown in the card appear in battle briefly in support of your character. Finally, there's the "Help Card," which adds speed to your character and can be used two times in battle; we're not sure if there are other forms of Help Card or if this is the only one. The bottom screen also displays items that you can use in battle, with the demo containing just one item. In the demo version of the game, four players playing wirelessly were given a deck consisting of the same four Battle Cards, allowing them to change between Naruto (from Naruto), Bo-Bobo (from Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo), Goku (from Dagon Ball) and Luffy (from One Piece), with each player starting off with a different character. The game is early, so we didn't get to check out the character selection screen to see what other characters will end up being playable, nor were we able to confirm if players can create and save their own decks. Outside of the card features provided by the bottom screen, the fighting system in Jump Superstars is reminiscent of Smash Brothers. Y and B are used for, respectively, weak and strong attacks, with X for jumping. Pressing A releases one special move, with the D-pad used in combination with A for a second special move. Down is used to guard, with down plus jump used to lower yourself to a platform below Jump Superstars drew big crowds at the Jump Festival Players start off with 100 points, and as they fight, they take points from other players based on the strength of their attacks. The player with the most points when time ends is the winner. Strangely, if a character reaches 0 points, he can still fight, but other players can no longer get any points by beating up on him. In addition to the point meter, players have J-Damashii meters, one for each character in their Manga Deck. This J-Damashii meter depletes with special attacks and time, and when it's depleted completely, the character changes to black and white and incurs super damage if hit. You can replenish your J-Damashii meter by making use of items that you find in the stage (the one item from the demo was actually for replenishing this meter). The demo contained just one fighting stage themed in One Piece and featuring the instantly recognizable pirate ship in the background and lots of platforms in the foreground, including platforms that move up and down. The battle stage is meant to be one frame of a comic, and if you scroll up high enough, you can see another black and white frame above it. The left and right sides of the frame can be damaged by strong attacks, leaving small holes open that characters can fall through, appearing back on the battle field with some damage incurred. Jump Superstars looks closer to a Game Boy Advance game rather than Smash Brothers in terms of visuals, with 2D characters and backdrops. Still, the fast, Smash Brothers-influenced gameplay and use of the touch screen should make for an interesting fighting game at release, even for those who aren't too particular about Bo-Bobo and Goku.

It actually has to be on the ds cause its gameplay is unique. The bottom touch screen is used to switch characters and use items (senzu bean is an example of an item.U can get items on a stage like super smash bros)All other buttons r being used also so the touch screen is helping.Game boy has A and B buttons this game needs 4 buttons. There is also 3-D games for the ds ill get pics later. Splinter Cell/Goldeneye:Rogue Agent/NeedForSpeedUnderGround2.

Smash Bros. is kinda inbetween huh?
The graphics are 3-D, but the characters can't move in a 3rd dimension.

Alright! Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is the king! He uses his enormous nose hair as a weapon.
